Any dentist can treat children, but it takes a team of special people to ensure that little kids feel safe, secure, and comfortable. At Skyview Dental, our team is committed to providing a great experience for all ages, especially our youngest patients.
As a father, Dr. Calvin Despain knows that each child has a unique personality. He and our team will treat your little one with the same patient, caring approach they would expect for their children.
When Should My Child First See the Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child see their dentist when the first baby tooth appears but no later than age one. Protecting baby teeth is crucial even though they will eventually come out.
Baby teeth are placeholders for adult or permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost too soon, neighboring teeth lose support and start to drift and tilt into the open space. When the permanent tooth is ready to emerge, it doesn't have enough room, resulting in crowding and potential tooth misalignment.
Children's Dentistry in Moses Lake, WA
It's never too soon to start your child's oral hygiene routine. In infancy, you can use a soft washcloth to gently clean their gums to remove bacteria. Another benefit is that your little one gets accustomed to oral care from the beginning.
We don't want to overwhelm children at their first dental visit, so we take things slowly and let them get used to us at their pace. Dr. Despain will work at their comfort level until they are receptive and relaxed.
We'll add exams and cleanings at subsequent visits and provide helpful tips to parents for their at-home oral hygiene. These appointments are also an excellent opportunity to ask our dentist and hygienist your questions about oral hygiene, nutrition, or anything else that's on your mind.
Dental Services As Your Child Grows
It's exciting to watch our youngest patients grow, and we'll be there for all the important milestones. We will perform exams and cleanings every six months and determine if they are at risk for caries or cavities.
Fluoride Applications for Strong, Healthy Teeth
If your child develops a cavity, we'll treat it and explain how you can avoid another one in the future. Dr. Despain may also recommend fluoride applications to strengthen teeth and provide further protection against cavities.
Dental Sealants Protect Teeth from Cavities
Our children's dentist may also recommend dental sealants to protect your child's smile. A sealant is a thin coating of plastic that covers a tooth's rough chewing surfaces where bacteria collect and cause decay.
Prevent Dental Injuries with Protective Sports Mouthguards
It's crucial for all children who play contact sports like soccer, basketball, and football to wear protective mouthguards. You can purchase a generic mouthguard, or you can opt for a custom sports guard. We'll use impressions of your child's teeth to fabricate a sturdy mouthguard that fits comfortably, so they're more likely to remember to wear it.
