Steps to Take in a Dental Emergency
There are some steps you can take to handle your dental emergency until you can get to our dental office:
Toothache, Jaw Pain or Swelling
A mild toothache is a sign of a developing problem and needs prompt attention. Severe tooth pain, especially when combined with jaw pain or swelling, could mean that you have an infected or abscessed tooth that needs immediate attention.
To relieve your pain, try swishing warm salt water around in your mouth, using a cold compress on the affected area, and taking a store-bought pain reliever like ibuprofen or Tylenol.
Broken Tooth, Lost Crown, or Filling
If you experience any of these, you may not need immediate treatment unless you are in pain. Even if you aren’t in pain, it is still important that you make an appointment with Dr. Despain as soon as possible to prevent the tooth from getting worse.
The longer a broken tooth is left untreated, the harder and more expensive it is to restore. For a broken tooth or lost filling, collect whatever pieces you can and bring them to your emergency dental appointment.
Food Stuck between Teeth
A mild toothache may be due to a piece of food stuck between your teeth. Try gently flossing to remove it, but never use a sharp or pointy object to dislodge it. If it stays stuck, call us, and we’ll be happy to help you.
A knocked-out tooth is an urgent situation, and we have less than two hours to try to save it. Call us right away.
When handling the tooth, hold it by the crown only, and do not touch the root! You must keep the root moist, and the safest place for the tooth is back in the socket. Try reinserting it gently; if you can’t, hold it in your mouth between your cheek and gums or place it in a container of milk or saliva. Do not use tap water.
