4 Flossing Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Request An Appointment

We’re pretty pumped about the big holiday coming later this month. National Flossing Day on November 24 is a cause to celebrate! What, you thought we meant Thanksgiving? Sure, that’s a great day too. But as your dentist, we appreciate any chance to highlight the importance of flossing your teeth. If you’re like most people, you probably make a few flossing mistakes. But we’re happy to help you correct them.

We’re happy to help you perfect your flossing technique at your next exam. If you need to schedule one, call us today at 509-707-8696. A lesson is often especially helpful for your kids

In the meantime, check out our advice on fixing these flossing mistakes:

  • Just Winging It – We’ll admit it, flossing can be a little tricky until you get the hang of it. A visual is definitely helpful if you want to learn the right way to do it. You can watch this video from the ADA or many others online. When you come in for an exam or other service, we’re also happy to help you with some hands-on practice.
  • Flossing Too Aggressively – If you haven’t flossed regularly, your gums may feel a bit tender or even bleed a bit the first few times you do it. However, after that initial adjustment, it shouldn’t be uncomfortable or cause bleeding. A gentle touch is all that is needed as you move the floss between and around your teeth. Don’t “saw” back and forth.
  • Not Flossing Daily – It’s easy to skip flossing. But you should do it daily. To keep it top of mind, try keeping your floss where you can see it when you brush your teeth. You can also slip some floss into places where you might have a few extra minutes for flossing, like your car or your desk at work.
  • Seeing It as a Chore – You’ll likely enjoy flossing – or at least not mind it – if you find things that make it easier. Experiment with floss to see which ones work best for you. Most people have a clear preference for either waxed or unwaxed. You can also find floss in flavors. We can also suggest tools like water flossers, interdental brushes, and dental picks. For some folks, they will simply work better than regular floss.

Flossing makes you less prone to dental decay and disease. But you’ll still need to see us for regular exams and cleanings. You should schedule these services every six months. Call Skyview Dental at 509-707-8696 to visit us in Moses Lake, WA.
