Commonly Asked Questions About Oral Surgery

When would I need oral surgery?

There are several circumstances that might require oral surgery. If you or your loved one has a badly damaged or diseased tooth, it may need removal. Likewise, wisdom teeth often cause problems as they emerge and need to be extracted. Other procedures like bone grafts, sinus lifts, and ridge augmentations prepare for treatments such as dental implants. Gum grafts will repair receded gums and help them heal properly.

When is oral surgery covered by insurance?
Your dental insurance or medical insurance may cover a portion of your oral surgery. We recommend you check with your individual carriers to find out what they will and won't pay for before you have any work done. That way there aren't any big surprises in store for you. As a convenience, we offer third-party financing through several companies.
When can I exercise after oral surgery?

For the first 24 hours after your oral surgery, you should not exercise at all. Doing too much too fast can actually create problems and prolong healing. Overexertion can loosen the blood clot from an extraction site and cause a painful condition known as dry socket. After the first 24 hours, limit your exercise to low-impact activities for several more days.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed? 

Wisdom teeth may need removal if they become impacted, repeatedly infected, difficult to clean, or begin damaging neighboring teeth. Some wisdom teeth never cause trouble. Dental X-rays can show their position and help determine whether monitoring them or removing them is the better approach.

What can I eat after oral surgery? 

Soft foods that require little chewing are usually best at first. Yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies eaten with a spoon, and similar foods can be easier on the surgical area. Avoid hard, crunchy, very hot, or spicy foods until healing has progressed, and don't use a straw after an extraction.

What is dry socket? 

Dry socket can occur when the protective blood clot at an extraction site is lost or breaks down before the area has healed. This can expose underlying bone and cause significant pain. Avoiding smoking, vigorous rinsing, straws, and other suction during early healing can help reduce your risk.
